La compañía sueca comienza a renovar su gama mostrando al público su berlina intermedia. Por cierto, que los vehículos de la marca siguen un esquema único, en cuanto a medidas se refiere. Me explicaré. El inicio pasa por el S40, un modelo equivalente a competidores compactos de tres volúmenes como el BMW Serie 3. Pero, y aquí esta la novedad, compite con los Ford Mondeo y VW Pasat en un segmento anterior al de las berlinas medias, como un Audi A6. Y son premium. ¿Funcionará?

Pues por lo que sabemos por el momento, lo van a tener difícil. A pesar de que su predecesor comenzó a comercializarse el 2001, el salto no resulta tan evidente como seguramente se pretendía. No tanto por la cantidad de tecnología, como por el posicionamiento en el mercado.

El precio de partida se sitúa en 31.000 euros, es decir, muy por encima de las berlinas generalistas, pero ligeramente por debajo de las premium compactas si se igualan motorizaciones y equipamiento. El problema es si el comprador medio estará dispuesto a equiparar ambos modelos para conseguir que la cifra sea atractiva.

Es una fórmula que ya emplea Jaguar con sus modelos XF y XJ, (no tanto en el XK, dónde el equipamiento de serie no es tan abundante), sólo que ellos no ofrecen tamaño adicional a cambio. Es decir, que Volvo juega dos partidos al mismo tiempo; el de ofrecer un vehículo más grande que sus competidores (con respecto a los Serie 3 y Clase C, por ejemplo) y con el de ofrecer un producto de calidad (con respecto a los Peugeot 407 y Skoda Octavia).

Una lanza rota a su favor, el sistema de seguridad activa que incorpora el S60, y que comparte con el XC60. Aquí los parámetros se rompen, y en Volvo llevan 30 años publicitando que sus creaciones reaccionan mejor en el peor de los momentos.
