Es preciso comentar antes de nada, que los prototipos que compiten en la Shell Eco Marathon distan mucho de los coches convencionales, si bien ninguno de ellos tiene más ayuda para recorrer el circuito que un motor de gasolina, diesel o GLP (gases licuados del petróleo) según la categorÃa. No importa si tienen tres o cuatro ruedas, o si están fabricados con madera o fibra de carbono. Lo importante es el bajo consumo de carburante ya que esto es una carrera de ahorro de energÃa.
Antes de cada prueba, el minidepósito de cada vehÃculo se llena casi gota a gota con gasolina o gasóleo. Se mide la temperatura para corregir la dilatación del carburante por el calor y para convertir el volumen de la temperatura teórica de 20 grados centÃgrados.
Durante el fin de semana de competición, los equipos tienen cuatro oportunidades para marcar su mejor registro, el que le otorgará el puesto definitivo en la clasificación general. En cada tentativa, los prototipos deben dar seis vueltas al circuito (21,636 kilómetros) en un tiempo máximo de 51,56 minutos, o sea, a una media de 25 km/h. Al terminar la prueba, los jueces miden el combustible gastado y mediante una simple regla de tres determinan cuántos kilómetros habrÃan recorrido con un litro de combustible. Tan lejos llegó la batalla por vencer al consumo en esta última edición que la diferencia entre el equipo ganador, el “Fancy Carol†japonés y el segundo clasificado, el TIM, de la Universidad Paul Sabatier de Tolouse (ganador el pasado año), fue de sólo una diezmilésima de litro a los 100 kilómetros. Como curiosidad, debido a que la medición con una pipeta de laboratorio tradicional daba el resultado de empate, hubo de utilizarse una balanza de alta precisión para decidir la victoria, un triunfo infinitesimal
